October
|
October is a busy month. Children and families are settling in to their new schedules and the holiday season begins. Our whole school will celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. Children will do many other projects centered around holidays our families may celebrate at home. Children are invited to talk about the holidays their families celebrate and will learn what other celebrations take place around the world. If you have a fun tradition that you would like to share with the class, let your teacher know. Because Hands On children attend our school on different schedules, we try to make sure that we include some sort of celebration each day so that all the children get to participate in something special and do not feel that they are missing out. October activities are as follows:
Date TBA– A field trip to Kruger's On Hawthorne. Parents are invited to join.
Monday Oct. 31--Parent coffee and Halloween Parade and pizza lunch.
A parent coffee will be in the lounge starting at 9 AM. Parents can enjoy coffee and get to know each other, then at 9:30 the preschool children will parade through in their costumes.
Tuesday, Nov. 1. Wear your pajamas to school and have breakfast for lunch! Check your classroom door for parent sign up sheets to help at all of these fun events!

September Fun
The students had fun learning about leaves and apples. We tasted apples, printed with apples, cooked with apples, and painted apple trees. Ask your child to sing you “5 little apples up in a tree “. Leaves also gave the children opportunities to learn and play. We made glitter leaves, collected leaves and printed with them. We learned a new song. Ask your child to sing you the song about raking the leaves. We talked about all the different colors of fall, and went on a nature walk and worked in the garden.
We also enjoyed a visit from " Talk About Trees" and Joan helped us make paper and learn about trees. Both classes learned about trees with leaves and trees with needles. Please remember to take home your child’s artwork and send a coat each day. Thank You! |
Sick kids
Thank you to everyone who washes their children's hands when you get to school! Thank you for keeping your sick children home. If your child has a fever or runny nose please keep him or her home from school. Preschool is a fun place and it is hard to have fun when you do not feel well.

Eco-Healthy Child Care
This is our fourth school year that we have been part of the Oregon Environmental Council’s Eco-Healthy Child Care program. According to The Oregon Environmental Council, “The Eco-Healthy Child Care program ensures that child care settings are as environmentally healthy as possible.” Our school is composting our food waste, recycling, and trying to reduce waste. You can help us each day by sending a water bottle with your child and by packing reusable or recyclable containers in your child's lunch. |
Extra Clothes
Please make sure your child has a set of extra clothes at school. You can leave them on their coat hook, or in their cubby. |
Aid Kit
We are currently putting together a larger first aid kit that would be available to us in the event that we were unable to leave our building for any amount of time. You can help us by donating water bottles, granola bars and other non-parishable foods, diapers and baby wipes. We will leave a big bin outside the door to collect all of the emergency items. |
When dropping off your child.
|
When you bring your child into the classroom make sure to check in with the teacher. Some children like to have a parent read to them or get them started on a morning project. After a few minutes it is a good idea to go and let your child get started on their school day. Sometimes drop off is harder for parents than the children. If you child is sad that you are leaving, a teacher will comfort him or her to make your exit easier. |
Our Hands On family really is a 'family tradition'
At Hands On, we've always known that we are a family, but this year our 'family' contains an exceptional number of returning siblings. In the Picasso class Davis, Mae and Laurel are the 3rd children in their families to attend Hands On! Kate and Amalia also have siblings that have graduated from Hands On. Henry and Adeline F. have siblings that currently attend Hands On. And Aris (Monet class) and Oliver have siblings that have attended Hands On! It will be really fun to see all of our families, old and new, for our evening Stone Soup Potluck Nov. 10. |
