See you soon! |
Back To School
"Back to school" is so exciting. For many children this is all new, a first experience. Others, having moved up from the Monet room, come in and declare, “I am in the big room now!” Some children settle in to the comforts of the same class, taking their turn at being the oldest in the classrooms. I think it is important for classes to be mixed age. It gives the students an opportunity to learn from their peers at one time and to take charge at another. It helps build their confidence and securities. The more confident and secure we are, the more willing we are to try something new and ask for help if we need it . When children move on to kindergarten, it isn’t only their A, B,Cs that help them. It is the inner strength that tells them that they can do it, even if they need to try a few times. Preschool is a magical place. Children begin to emerge as themselves and have their own time. They develop true friendships and enjoy each other's company. Most of all, children are delighted to learn, play and have fun. All of the teachers are looking forward to teaching this year and we thank you for sending your beautiful children to our school. |
Our classes and teachers
MONET CLASS
Our Monet Class is for children 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years old. We always have two teachers and never more than 10 children. This year our teachers will be: Monday - Friday------Teacher Serena. This will be Teacher Serena's 11th year as a teacher in the Monet room! Tuesday and Friday-----Teacher Kathy. Teacher Kathy started working in the Monet room in 2003! Her daughter Kate is a graduate of Hands On. Mon/Wed----Teacher Julie Teacher Julie has two kids that graduated from Hands On. Julie was a substitute before becoming a teacher in the Monet room in 2006!
PICASSO CLASS
The Picasso class is for children 3 1/2 to 5. We usually have between 10 and 15 children in class with 2 or 3 teachers each day. This year our teachers will be: Monday-Friday----Teacher Jennifer
Teacher Jennifer started Hands On in 2000! Her youngest daughter Quinn attended Hands On and was in the 2nd graduating class. Mon/Wed/Friday----Teacher Paula
Teacher Paula's daughter, Emily, also graduated from Hands On. Paula started working as a substitute teacher and then became a Picasso teacher in 2006! Tuesday and Thursday----Teacher Michelle Teacher Michelle started as a substitute for Hands On and is now looking forward to teaching her second school year at Hands On while her own 2 children are at school. Wednesdays----Teacher Vikki
Teacher Vikki joined us as a substitute in 2008 and joined our Wednesday class last year. When not working at Hands On you can find Vikki teaching art classes at Multnomah Art Center.
Substitute Teacher----Veronica will help out in our classrooms throughout the year. Veronica's son Jackson is a graduate of Hands On and Veronica worked last year as a substitute as well as a teacher in our summer program.
It is such a bonus for our students that our teachers have worked at Hands On for so many years. If a teacher has to miss a day of school, another current teacher often can fill in. This is especially nice because the children know their substitute teacher and the teachers know our daily routine.

The drop-in rate is $35 a day. *Our invoices & newsletters are sent electronically so if we have something to hand out to your child, like information about a party or field trip, you will see it hanging up with their artwork in the hall. |
Snack and Lunch
Hands On will offer your child a healthy snack each day. Children are always welcome to chose an item from their lunch box if they do not care for the day's snack. Preschoolers love lunch! We will always pack what is left over back in the box so you know what did, or didn't, get eaten. Many parents are asking what to send. Children seem to like a few choices of things to eat. It can be finger foods, things that dip, a sandwich, fruit & veggies, or even last night's dinner! If you are including a treat in the lunch we will encourage your child to eat the healthy food first. A water bottle is also a great thing to have.
Since a few of our students have life threatening allergies to peanuts we ask that all families not include peanut butter or peanuts in your child's lunch. Other nuts and nutbutters are OK. Thanks for your understanding. |
Outside Play
We love to play outside each day! Some days it still seems like summer with wonderful warm weather! If your child needs sunscreen make sure to put it on him or her before coming to school. Other days it feels like winter! Your child may need something warm to wear, or even boots for outside. Feel free to leave boots, hat , mittens and a coat at school on your child's hook if you don't want to bring one each day. |
Colds and Flu
We are asking for your help to avoid the spread of any colds and flu this school year. Parents, when you get to school each morning, please take your children to the bathroom and help them wash their hands. I know that this takes extra time, but staying home to get over a flu will take longer.
