Summer camps are off to a great start!

So far this summer our campers have enjoyed dancing, cooking, making recycled art and building!  We are making so many new friends as we have new campers each week.  The kids also love more time on the playground in the sun and working in the garden.

Summer Camp Teachers

You will see Teachers Jennifer and Julie around this summer but you have probably noticed a few other new faces.  This summer we welcome Quinn, Malaika, Claire, Lily, Phoebe and Abby to our camps as summer camp teachers.
Teacher Quinn
Quinn just finished her second year at OSU studying Renewable Materials in Forestry. She is currently studying abroad in Slovenia and Italy but will be back for camps in July and August. This will be Quinn’s 6th year at Hands On.  She is Teacher Jennifer’s daughter and enjoys working with children at Hands On as well as Ronald McDonald House, both as a baker and in the children’s program.
Teacher Malaika
This is Malaika’s second year teaching at Hands On during the summer. Malaika will be a Senior at Cleveland High School and has been in the Mandarin Immersion program since kindergarten.  At school she is a mentor for ELL (English Language Learners) working with immigrant and refugee students.   She has many years of babysitting experience and has organized a camp for kids in her neighborhood for the last 4 years.  Malaika is interested in continuing babysitting this summer and next year.
Teacher Claire
Claire just graduated from The Catlin Gabel School and will start college in New York in the Fall.  Claire was our spring intern and many of our campers got to know her during the school year.  She has spent the last few years teaching swimming lessons to very young children and absolutely loved it! She enjoys to working with the kids and is also interested in babysitting.
Teacher Lily
Lily just graduated from Grant High School and is looking forward to attending college in California in the fall.  She has worked with Portland Parks and Recreation as a swim instructor and a life guard for the last 3 years.  During that time Lily also worked at an art camp and ran her own camp for neighborhood kids.  Lily is also interested in babysitting over the summer.
Teachers Phoebe and Abby
Sisters Abby and Phoebe both attend Grant High School.  In the fall Phoebe will be in 10th grade and Abby will be in 12th.   They both have experience in preschool since their mom is a preschool teacher at  Childswork and they have helped in her classroom over the years.  Both Phoebe and Abby have been babysitting since 6th grade and loves spending time with kids.  Phoebe helped out at a summer camp last year and spent the school year volunteering in a first grade classroom.  Abby has worked as a swim instructor, life guard and cashier for the pool and is also currently working at a restaurant.

Yearbooks

Our yearbooks have shipped and should be here soon.  You can pick them up during camp beginning July 8th.  I will keep them at school so if you are gone all summer, don’t worry you can get it in September.  Thank you to everyone that bought one, we raised $300 to spruce up our playground!  Thank you!
